I'm going to admit it. I have trouble with work/life balance. I am a very passionate person, and I tend to overdo it on a lot of things. (I know that I'm, not the only one!) I tend to get an idea in my head and go full steam ahead ploughing through projects until I can barely stand. So to counterbalance my work-a-holic nature, I am going to be integrating a practice which feeds my soul.
Over the next 60 days, I am going to be dedicating 60 minutes a day creating small 2-dimensional art pieces. As a commercial artist, sometimes it is hard to get myself to create work outside of the working hours. I'm talking about art without obligation or concrete intention. As I spend most of my days creating on a fixed path, sometimes it is nice to just create work solely because it is the activity that feeds my soul and keeps me stoked on everything else in my life.
With my current schedule, it is really difficult to find "me" time. If I don't plan to do a personal activity chances are that it will get pushed to the side in order to make way for my budding business. I mean, I love working with my clients, but I need to make myself a bigger priority as well. So to fit in time for myself, I have decided to commit to what I'm calling the 60/60/60 challenge. I will be spending 60 minutes a day over 60 days to create 60 pieces of FUN artwork. Today was my first day and I am pretty happy with the results.
Ta-Da! My first collage in maybe 15 years! Although I feel that I have a lot of room for improvement, this was a great place to start! I felt the freedom and zen from creating a piece from the heart, only to be created for me.
In regards to my choice of medium, I have always been drawn to collages. I love the simplicity and serindipity that they provide in one 2D image. Within moments you have created a whole new world, a place that never existed outside of your subconscious mind. As a child I was drawn to Dada and Surrealist artwork. I feel that those influences are coming out here in this new piece.
If you would like to see some of my inspiration, check out my pinterest board on collages. https://www.pinterest.com/braidwork/collage/
So i need to ask, who wants to join me? Are you looking for a partner to share work with? Or maybe you need some inspiration to keep you moving or to get started? Contact me today and lets create some art together!
Be prepared to see more. This is only day 01.
One down, 59 to go!
(Seen here, is the full piece.)
*Update- I have been continuing to create work for the 60/60/60 Challenge. I will be featuring them on my website and via social media. But here is a sneak peak of a few of the additional pieces that I have created.
